I guess I’m in a big, ol’ wordy mood this week. Barely any pictures or recipes, just lots of words each day. Lots and lots. So today….Pinterest. This site is just intriguing me to no end. What I find amusing about it is that I had my very own Pinterest-like wall in college when I was an art student. We all had our studios….big rooms up on the 3rd and 4th floors of the art building on campus (Syracuse for me) that were filled with these armoires of sorts…each student had one. You flipped open the doors on the top, pulled down the desk which then sat on the two opened doors below and wah-lah! You had your own art area. Shelves, rolling taborets, the whole she-bang. Add a few overworked coffee pots and a futon here and there and you have all that you need to survive. And if you were lucky, like I was, you scored one of these spaces next to a wall. Therefore, you could HAVE that wall and pin your inspirations all over it instead of just sticking them to the armoire, but I did that too. I had ticket stubs, photos, bulletins, posters, funny notes from friends, sweet notes from friends, sassy pics of gorgeous men (need those for inspiration), great quotes…it was all there. By the end of the semester, it was a chore to take down all that had accumulated. It was a virtual masterpiece unto it’s own and a thing of beauty; somehow comforting and inspiring at the same time. A nice place for the eyes to rest and a great place for the mind to wander.
And now, a couple of blokes have taken our wall-idea, stuck it online and are making a fortune from it. Amazing. So, I’ve been trolling on Pinterest every once in a while. Fun stuff, I have to say. Almost paralyzing, though, in the way you can get sucked into it. It’s turning folks into visual hoarders by the minute. I have to pin that! and that! and that! pin, pin, pin! And then, you leave your computer and you don’t even have anything real to walk away with. It’s the oddest thing. A lot of ideas, yes, and I guess that’s the point. Inspiration. A place to fan the flame of creativity. Well, get cracking, because this site makes Martha Stewart look like a sloth.
There is one “board” that I quite like and I find myself there often. It’s the Posters and Prints board. Lots of great quotes and interesting typography (my inner graphic artist floating up to the surface here). I thought that today I’d pass along some of the good quotes that I have found recently….they get my brain humming and I hope they will do the same for yours…
-Follow your heart but take your brain with you.
-The Creative Adult is the child who survived (love this one!)
-Why not go out on a limb? That’s where the fruit is (thank you, Mr. Twain. Well said)
-Worrying does not empty tomorrow of it’s troubles. It empties today of it’s strength (another fabulous one!)
-Please and Thank you are still magic words. 🙂
-The best things in life are free. The second best are very expensive (had to throw this one in there. It made me laugh)
-The earth without art is “eh” (so true!)
-Always believe that something wonderful is about to happen (nice!)
-The grass is greener where you water it (and how!)
-A smile is the best makeup any girl can wear (good words for our daughters)
-Promote what you love instead of bashing what you hate.
And one for the funny bone….When you really want to slap someone, do it and say “Mosquito!”.
Enjoy these words…may they feed your soul the way they do mine~
