Arrrrrrr! (That’s my Zombie voice)

As you grow older and get to know yourself better, you zero-in on your likes and figure out where you stand with things. You color yourself in with all the crayons of life.

I’ve come to discover this…that with the exception of a good Pinot Noir or Malbec, I’m really a cocktail girl. Somehow, cocktails don’t get the same rap that wine does. They are the party-girl to wine’s studious roommate. But I like them, I will admit that freely, knowing that they are not as smooth and elegant as a gleaming balloon-shaped glass of oakey-berry-chocolately-honeyed wine that is sniffed and swirled with knowing sips.

Maybe it starts with the glasses for cocktails…I like those tall, elegant flutes, the rounded, sultry coupes, the sleek Martinis. I like the way hands look when they are holding them and I like feeling them in my own hands, as if they beg to accompany gestures in a conversation.

Then there are the colors of them. The frothy, pale yellows of a French 75, the pink and happy Cosmo, the syrupy amber of a Dark and Stormy, the cool, clear Mojito.

As the giant, golden Harvest moon hung over our heads this weekend-bringing with it a good deal of lunacy-a Halloween party was thrown. Costumes of all variety were worn, guests laughed and enjoyed the seasonal fun (I have a theory that grown-ups enjoy dressing up in costume more than they necessarily care to admit). A new drink was passed to the adults in vibrant day-glo test tubes…hands reached, heads were thrown back and “hey, that’s good” was heard many times over.

Serve these at your next Halloween fete and get all Zombilicious…..Arrrrrr…. Here’s the link for some test tubes to complete the presentation…http://barsupplies.com/test-tube-party-pack-p-4078.html

Partake of The Zombie Cocktail, courtesy of HGTV

1 oz. apricot brandy
1 oz. light rum
1 oz. dark or Jamaican rum
1 oz. lime juice
2 dashes grenadine
orange juice
1 oz. Bacardi 151 rum

OR you can do what I did since I was making them for a crowd….pour a jug of Tropicana in a big pitcher and add the other ingredients to taste. You’ll have to taste as you go along, so by the time the Zombie has been Zombified, you’ll be glowing….
